Anshu Kumar Bhuyan, Adwithya Patnaik and Tanmayee Patnaik cornered glory, winning the men’s, under-14 boys’ and under-16 girls’ singles titles in the 8th Puri Open Tennis Tournament, which concluded at Puri Club here today In the grueling men’s singles final, Anshu of Ace Base Tennis Resort fought back from match point to beat top seed Chinmay Pradhan of Gurukul Tennis Academy (GTA) in 2-1 sets. Sixth seed Bhuyan displayed stronger nerve and more stamina to win the two hour and 45 minute long final 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 Boys’ top seed Adwithya faced stiff fight against his GTA-mate Shakti Ray before winning the boys’ singles final 8-5.
In the girls singles summit clash, second seed Tanmayee registered a hard-earned 7-4 win over Koyal Mishra, who earlier caused a major upset, eliminating top seed Avilipsa Rath in the semifinals D Pradhani and A N Guru bagged the veteran doubles title, defeating Dushmant Tunga and Lalit Dash in the final. Pradhani and Guru were leading 6-4, 2-6, 2-0 when their opponents conceded the match due to a knee injury suffered by Tunga.
Sports and Youth Service Minister Pravin Chandra Bhanjadeo and Sports Secretary Pradeepta Kumar Mohaptra handed over the trophies at the closing function.
